The Excuses That Held Me Back

Must Try

If you’ve ever delayed booking a therapy appointment, you already know the list of excuses is long and persuasive:

  • It’s too expensive.
  • I don’t have time.
  • What if I don’t like the therapist and have to awkwardly switch?
  • What if I don’t know what to say?
  • What if it doesn’t work for me?

For years, those “what ifs” stood between me and actually starting. Therapy felt like this mysterious, slightly intimidating thing—something you needed to prepare for, something that required your full emotional availability, your calendar’s cooperation, and your insurance’s blessing.

So I delayed. And distracted. And told myself that journaling and self-help books were enough for now.

Spoiler: they weren’t.
