Let’s be honest, firsts are always a little weird. Your first workout class. Your first day at a new job. Your first therapy session is no different.
I remember overthinking what I should say. “Hi, I’ve never done this before” didn’t feel eloquent, but that’s what came out. My therapist smiled (virtually), nodded, and gently guided the conversation like she’d done it a thousand times before. Because, well, she had.
It wasn’t a breakthrough moment. I didn’t cry. But I also didn’t feel judged, rushed, or like I was “doing it wrong.” And that was a win.
From there, each session built on the last. I learned that therapy doesn’t have to be about unraveling childhood trauma or having some big crisis to discuss (though it can be about that). Sometimes it’s about unpacking stress. Learning boundaries. Processing something that felt small but stuck with you.
